Jaime Reyes was a relatively normal high school student from El Paso, Texas. His father ran a garage, his mother was a paramedic, and his little sister was a brat. Jaime hung out with his two best friends Brenda and Tye, the mediator between the hard-working Brenda and the laid-back Tye. By both Brenda and Tye's accounts, he was a good friend, the kind of person who could let them be themselves, and who could always make things better. Jaime aimed to help his father out at the garage, but Alberto turned him down, not wanting to see his son grow up too fast.

Skateboarding on his way home from a friend's house, Jaime took a short cut through the parking lot of Kord Industries. Almost off the property, Kord Industries building exploded into fiery ruin, sending out a shock way which knocked Jaime off his board, and shrapnel and debris everywhere. In the wreckage, Jaime got to his feet and saw something blue and shiny about a yard away.

As Jaime held the blue scarab beetle in his hand, it came to live, crawled onto his back and embedded itself in the teen. Panicking, Jaime tried to remove the creature, but the prongs of its legs were actually in his skin, connected to his spinal cord. Returning home, Jaime fell into a deep sleep that night, having strange dreams. The next morning, he woke to a strange voice in his head.

The Scarab, which Jaime thinks is the creation of Ted Kord (the original Blue Beetle) is actually a cybernetic symbiotic device. It was created as a tool of the alien race known as The Reach to take control of an individual, and use that person as a puppet to further their goals of planetary takeover. The Scarab was sent to earth thousands of years ago, and was discovered in a dig site in Bialya. Jaime's Scarab was damaged in the explosion which killed Ted Kord, and is not under the Reach's control.

The Scarab grants Jaime many abilities, but the two individual consciousness often disagree. The Scarab is hostile, aggressive and tends to react to every assumed offense with the offer of devastating and fatal force. It also is not very forthcoming with its abilities, only offering information if Jaime asks about it. Jaime on the other hand, is passive, kind, compassionate, and uses force as his last resort. This leads to arguments between Jaime and Scarab.

Scarab can talk to Jaime telepathically, and no one else can hear what the Scarab is saying, except for Jaime. Jaime COULD speak telepathically to the Scarab in return, but instead speaks out loud. This leads to confusion of his Team-mates, the thought that Jaime is 'an odd little fish,' and his Team thinking that Jaime is slightly unbalanced, since they only hear ONE side of the argument. For example, "I'm fine with being on Gamma Squad... ...No I'm not... ...No I'm NOT!"

While not on duty, Jaime attends Rio Grande High School, living in El Paso, Texas with his mother and step-father. His step-father is mildly abusive to both Jaime and his mother, and Jaime has to restrain the Scarab from killing his step-father on almost a daily basis. Jaime's father and sister live in a neighboring town, the family a victim of divorce.

Jaime recently joined the Young League, and is fondly referred to as "Blue." Jaime, unlike most of the other members of the Team, does not have a 'sponsor' or 'parent hero' which leads him to be independent, though unsure of himself. With no one to help him figure out his abilities, much of what he can do is based on self-discovery and trial and error.

Abilities:
The Scarab on Jaime's back protects its host by forming a full body armor which only shows Jaime's eyes.

Construction:
The suit is able to construct certain objects, such as staples, and Reach-tech "Eggs" through nanotechnology. The full extent of this ability has not been tested, but Blue's constructs are permanent, not holo-creations or magical conjurations.

Durability:
The suit has protected Jaime from the deleterious effects of being stomped on—twice—by the Appellaxian Golem. The scarab also calculated that it could possibly survive the bomb blast that destroyed Mount Justice. Blue has been known to withstand punches from Superman and Superboy during routine training.

Energy blasts:
The suit can transform parts of the armor into a sonic cannon or plasma cannon. The suit can also transform the chest into a larger plasma cannon. It can also produce electrical blasts.

Flight:
The suit can sprout translucent wings, enabling him to fly, but they do not flap like real wings; instead they stay in one place. The suit also has additional rocket boosters.

Holo-projection:
The suit can generate holographic images similar to those produced by the Wayne-Tech computers mounted in Nightwing, Robin, and Batgirl's wrist computers, as well as the Bat-cave and Mount Justice (the Team's headquarters).

Sensors:
The suit has a variety of sensor systems. It is capable of producing scanner units that can be used to detect the presence of people in buildings. The Scarab also has passive sensors that can monitor other people's physiology which, along with voice analysis, allows it to tell when a person is lying or being truthful, or has hostile intentions.

Super strength:
The suit grants Blue Beetle enhanced strength, allowing him to knock down powerhouses like Tuppence Terror and Superboy.

Technology interface:
The suit is capable of manipulating Reach technology upon contact and altering its functions. This extends to the ability to link with other scarabs through tendrils, allowing attempts to reset or destroy the other scarab. This is not without risk, as such attempts can be resisted and even reversed.

Transformation:
The suit can change into different forms. Examples of his transformations are a sonic cannon, battering ram, staple gun, a lock pick, maces, drills, scythe blades, and a plasma cannon. The suit can also partially transform, covering only his face, his hands or his chest. The suit can extend or retract on its own or it can respond to Jaime's thoughts.

Translation:
The suit has demonstrated the ability to translate Krolotean and Reach languages, as well as Earth languages like Japanese. These translations occur on the telepathic level, but also allow Jaime to speak languages he's never learned.

The Scarab seems to only be weak to certain types of magic and Apokolyptian technology.
Jaime had a belligerent relationship with his scarab, which was off-mode, or not functioning properly, when he got it. He has described the scarab as "Jiminy Cricket with a bad attitude", and is often surprised at the violent suggestions the scarab gave him. After learning that he would become dictator of Earth in the future, he wished to stop at nothing to get if off his spine. The Atom and Bumblebee attempted microsurgery, but the Scarab released 'anti-bodies' which forced the heroes to retreat. The Scarab will not allow its removal.

Since his arrival in the present Impulse has shown a personal interest in Blue Beetle, primarily to stop him from going evil. Impulse kept close to him, and urged him to keep the facts about his future a secret. Bart and Jaime are close friends, though Bart often steals food from he older boy. Jaime is the only member of the Team to know Bart's true, solemn nature, as the young speedster keeps on a humorous, optimistic face in public to mask the true nature of his being in the past.
